Stay Where Legends Have Slept at This Parisian Hotel
Welcome to L’Hôtel, a jewel in Paris’s 6th arrondissement. Originally built in 1838 by architect Célestin-Joseph Happe, this treasure located in Paris’s Left Bank is widely celebrated as the world’s first “boutique” hotel. Since the property has worn many masks and operated under various aliases. Following a glamorous 1960s renovation, it became a magnet for the cultural elite–hosting icons like Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, Salvador Dalí, and Anthony Bourdain.
Most famously, it is the very place where acclaimed author Oscar Wilde spent the final days of his life. In tribute to its most legendary resident, guests can today check into the spacious Oscar Wilde Suite. The room is a masterclass in period charm, featuring intricate decorative wallpaper, a lavish bathroom, and a private terrace perfect for a slow breakfast or a bottle of evening champagne. This same suite later hosted the late Chef Anthony Bourdain during the filming of No Reservations.
L’Hôtel feels less like a hotel and more like a private residence tucked away from the city. With only 20 rooms, it holds the distinction of being the smallest five-star property on the Left Bank. The interiors were designed by the renowned French Interior Designer, Jacques Garcia. Garcia’s work is known for being decadent and dramatic, drawing inspiration from 17th and 18th-century France.
His vision for L’Hôtel is extravagant, combining leopard-print carpets, ornate wallpapers, dramatic draping, and opulent fabrics of velvet and silk. The maximalist aesthetic inspired by historical French design movements effortlessly complements the building’s romantic architecture, casting a theatrical spotlight on the central spiral staircase, marble pillars, and glow of the grand skylight.
Each room is an individual world, curated with distinct textiles, rare lamps, and bespoke headboards. The accommodations cater to every guest:
Mignon: The Mignon is the smallest room type you can book, but thoughtfully composed and intimate, the rooms prove that their worth isn’t measured in square footage. The Mignon is perfect for solo travelers to explore the beautiful design of L’Hôtel and the city of Paris.
Bijoux: The Bijoux rooms offer views of the interior courtyard and allow guests to have a bit more space.
Grand: This is their Junior Suite option, which overlooks the picturesque Rue des Beaux-Arts.
Chic: Spacious quarters featuring eclectic decor inspired by historical figures, including Marco Polo.
Reine Hortense: A regal King Suite draped in opulent fabrics with a private balcony with iconic rooftop views. This suite is perfect for couples looking for a romantic getaway with private rooftop space to enjoy the City of Love.
L’Apartment: The hotel’s largest suite, featuring a private rooftop, a separate lounge area, and romantic and theatrical design throughout the space with silks and velvets draped everywhere in the room.
Once you’ve settled into your room and explored its inspired design, head down to Wilde’s Lounge to indulge in the art of the cocktail. Wilde’s Lounge does not serve gimmicky cocktails; instead, the menu favors authenticity, honoring the original roots, ingredients, and history of every drink served.
The menu’s two signatures are essential to taste. Our favorite, ‘L’Hôtel,’ is a spirit-forward creation with a blend of vodka and Saint Germain liqueur balanced with a tart cherry purèe and fresh lemon. It is the ideal choice for those who crave the sweetness from fruit without losing the bite of a serious cocktail. For those who prefer the botanical, ‘The Usual’ offers a floral escape of champagne, lime juice, and violet liquor.
The lounge itself is surrounded by rich colors, striped walls, and fringed velvet love seats. The inspiration comes heavily from the Empire-Period, inviting guests to lean back and appreciate the beauty of the history around where you are and what you are tasting.
A stay at L’Hôtel includes the rare luxury of a one-hour private session at the tranquil Hammam and steam room. Tucked away on the lower level, the stone-vaulted sanctuary is available by reserving a private time slot, ensuring your relaxation remains entirely uninterrupted.
We recommend booking a morning slot. There is no better way to start a day of exploration around the city than a gentle wake-up followed by a detoxifying session in the steam room and pool. The space allows you to leave feeling refreshed and centered before you step back out into the bustle of Paris.
If you are searching for a chic Parisian stay that balances intimate luxury with iconic history and masterful design, L’Hôtel remains our top choice.
